Spiritual Bio & Resumé:
What is a mystic? A life chosen by the divine to be in community with. What is the divine? The first beings of creation, given the titles God and angels or Orisha. I was born Olúwaṣẹ́gun – “the lord breaks conflict and strife.”
The communities I’ve been a part of have directed me to educate and organize. I’ve taught art and media to youth and facilitated support groups for adults living with HIV. I’ve organized marches and rallies for housing, immigrants, and Puerto Rican political prisoners. I’ve edited and published in multiple genres. As a sexual health educator, I’ve talked to thousands of people across the country about sex. Spirituality was a part of who I was, but not the focus or the organizations I called home.
I was baptized Catholic in the tradition of jíbaros continuing in diaspora. I learned to see divinity in nature by being in nature. I attended Catholic and Christian devotions and tended my spirituality through prayer and reading. I connected with people manifesting liberation through spirituality. I then sought a stronger community of common practices. I found it in Espiritismo Criollo and Lucumí. I completed rites in the latter, crowned Yemayá con Obatalá and given the name Omí Saidé.
These African, Indigenous, and folk European/ Mediterranean practices spoke to me as a descendent of mediums, free masons, and prophets. My great-grandparents and great-uncle founded spiritualist temples. I produced or presented research at universities on these traditions in six countries. I organized talks and conferences.
These roots then surprisingly led me to tai chi, yoga, Buddhist meditation, and veganism. I revisited Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. I more clearly understood my Caribbean Indigeneity. I rethought the practices and structures of religion. I re-learned what’s at the center of devotion to divinity: love of self and others.
Though I’ve been accepted into distinct faiths, tradition and culture is only one route to seeing the divine in all existence. Spirituality is about being in a relationship that’s unique and creative to you, too. This is why mystic best describes me, spiritually.
I didn’t plan on my spiritual growth leading to opportunities to help people. It’s been a journey towards coming into my power and being directed to share. What I offer is years of experience in spiritual cleaning, battles, and wars. I have lots of spiritual knowledge and a passion for creating a loving world. This project is a way to organize these opportunities, give their due respect, and for me to live and create.
